Depository Library Help

The Depository Library Program ensures that Montana citizens can get state publications in print or online: A library catalog record will tell if the library has the publication in print and/or digital version. Some newer depositories and search engines are digital only. If a digital state publication is available, a link to the publication will be found in the record or list returned by the search. From these links, the publication can be pulled up immediately and printed assuming there is a printer.

If the local depository library does not have a state publication in its collection, the publication may be requested from another depository library via InterLibrary Loan at a local public library.

Why is the depository library program important?

  • Montana State Library safeguards the citizens' right to know what their state government is doing. Distributing multiple copies of state publications around the state in depository libraries helps ensure permanent preservation. The State Library is also developing an archive to help ensure that state publications will be available permanently.
