Substitute Librarian

Accountable To

Head Librarian or Library Staff who is in charge

Summary of Work

The library sub will perform the everyday duties of the normal staff members.

Job Characteristics

  • Work with the public and other staff members
  • Perform the list of duties for all staff members to perform daily
  • Dress in a professional manner
  • Keep busy doing jobs from the list of everyday duties
  • Follow the regular policies and procedures of the library
  • Be extremely careful in check out and check in of books, make sure to check book pockets and cards when shelving and make sure there are no date due cards in books instead of book cards.

Job Accountability

  • Performs daily duties of the library
  • Assists patrons in the use if the library, including equipment
  • Performs circulation tasks efficiently
  • Uses patron-free time to the best of ability (shelving, straightening shelves etc.)
  • Dresses professionally
  • Uses good communications skills, both written and oral

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge: A working knowledge of library principles, organization, operation and procedures.
  • Skills and Abilities: Circulation of books, library equipment, communication skills, work well with others, work on your own and carry on tasks without being told.

Education and Experience

The above skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in teaching or library science, and some experience in teaching or library operations.
