PC Purchasing Specifications

Introduction

With the increased availability of electronic resources and the overall increased demand being placed on computers in libraries, it is vital that libraries obtain equipment that will handle necessary tasks effectively and efficiently. Slow computers operating older software are going to prove increasingly problematic to libraries attempting to share resources and access information in this digital, technologically-demanding environment we have embraced. As our access to an ever-expanding range of content-rich electronic resources increase, libraries need the capability to run faster, more advanced browsers and other applications.

Recently, when several Montana libraries wanted to purchase new computers, they asked the Montana State Library (MSL) for purchasing guidance. While the needs of individual libraries vary, MSL staff will attempt to assist libraries by recommending a minimum computer configuration.

The State of Montana currently has term contracts with Dell, IBM, and Compaq. Your library may be eligible to purchase workstations from the State contract with these vendors. Prices for PC workstations change every week.

The Montana State Library recommends the following MINIMUM basic configuration for libraries purchasing new computer workstations during June - December, 2008.
